SURGOINSVILLE — When Rex Meachum was 4 years old, a doctor told his mother he should be institutionalized after being diagnosed with autism.
His mom, Sameada Meachum, didn’t accept that advice, choosing instead to “put in the time” needed to help her son succeed in the world.
“(The doctor) said, ‘He needs to be in an institute because he’ll never achieve anything,’” Sameada said. “I looked at that doctor and I said, ‘Not my child,’ and I got up and walked out. Nobody knows what’s going to happen.”
Last month 16-year-old Rex was one of two lads in his Boy Scout troop to achieve the elite level of Eagle Scout. Sameada said she hopes Rex can be an inspiration to other parents of children with autism.
