What to Ask About Epilepsy

Confronting a new diagnosis can be frightening, and because research changes so often, confusing. If you — or your child — have epilepsy, here are some questions you may not think to ask your doctor, along with notes on why they are important.
What caused my epilepsy? Did I do something to bring on these seizures?
The causes of epilepsy remain unknown in about 7 of every 10 people who develop the condition. Epilepsy comes from an underlying problem or a permanent injury to the brain. Causes, when they can be identified, can include oxygen deprivation, exposure to toxins, brain infections, a genetic condition or a structural brain defect.
