Temple Grandin gives message of hope on autism

LIVERMORE -- When you think of the word "steeple," what do you see?
For most, it's a generalized image of a pointed-looking thing on a roof.
When world-famous autism advocate Temple Grandin thinks of a steeple, however, her mind conjures up something very different. Instead of one abstract illustration, she sees a slide show presentation of specific steeples she has encountered in her life -- from those on modest churches of her childhood to gothic spires gracing the cathedrals of France.
"My concept of a steeple is based on pictures of steeples I put in a file folder in my brain," Grandin told the audience during a sold-out Monday visit to Las Positas College. Grandin, a high-functioning autistic who was the subject of a 2010 Emmy award-winning HBO film, is widely regarded as the world's most accomplished and best-known adult with autism.
