Instead of shying away from uncomfortable questions about a neurological disorder, a 16-yearold Calabasas High School student is happy to discuss his experience with Tourette’s Syndrome. Logan Kurtz of Topanga was recently featured in the Tourette Syndrome Association’s national newsletter for his efforts to spread awareness about the disorder, which causes involuntary physical and vocal tics.
Shortly after he transferred to Calabasas High last year, Logan ran for vice president of his sophomore class to get involved and make friends. Although his tics tend to increase when he’s nervous, Logan gathered his courage to make a speech in front of 500 students who didn’t know him.

“I was concentrating so much on my speech that I didn’t notice my tics, but apparently others did,” he said.

The next day, many students approached Logan to ask why he was making weird faces during his presentation. The boy explained about Tourette’s. After repeated queries, he decided to create a Facebook page called “Help Spread the word about Tourette’s Syndrome” to educate people about his condition. Within weeks the site became a worldwide forum for people who have the disorder or who have children with Tourette’s.
