Students Learn Seriousness of Concussions

WHEELING - While all concussions are not the same, they are all serious.
That was the message Leslie Mabry conveyed to Wheeling Park High School students during Tuesday's presentation on the damaging effects of brain injuries.
Mabry serves as special events manager for the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, which was created by Patrick Donahue in honor of his daughter, who suffered brain injuries as an infant after being shaken by a baby sitter in 2005.
Injuries such as concussions can cause pediatric acquired brain injury, which is the number one cause of death and disability for children and young adults in the United States, Mabry said.
That statistic caught the attention of U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., who attended Tuesday's presentation.
McKinley said in a sports culture that often prides itself on toughness, steps need to be taken to educate parents and athletes on the possible consequences of returning to play too soon following a concussion.
