Living with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome: Family cherishes each moment

MIDWAY Denae Ayers used to be bothered by the looks. She knows them well, the downcast gazes of disapproval quietly shot in her direction at the grocery store when bystanders saw her daughter, Heather Carlton, behave in what many would believe was an out-of-control or unruly manner.

But what many parents failed to understand, or ask, was that this was actually a good day for Heather, an 11-year-old living with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, or LGS, a rare and often severe form of epilepsy that causes the redheaded, freckled-face girl to have debilitating seizures, sometimes several dozen a day.
