Study: Why students shouldn't stay up all night

This study explains why students should not pull all-nighters to study.

Memory neurons lull us to sleep in order to consolidate what we've learned, say researchers from Brandeis University, who advise students against pulling all-nighters to prepare for tests.

Knowing that sleep, memory and learning are deeply intertwined, the Brandeis team set out to find out whether memory is consolidated during sleep simply because the brain happens to be at rest or whether those neurons provoke sleep in order to do their job.

In the study, which was published in the journal eLife, the researchers focused on a specific group of neurons called the dorsal paired medial (DPM), which are well known to implant memories in fruit flies.

In what's thought to be a first-of-its-kind observation, the flies slept more when the DPM neurons were activated, yet continued to buzz about when these neurons were switched off.

As these neurons start to convert short-term memory to long-term memory, they do their best to make sure you stay sleeping and actually hinder wakefulness, according to the study.

In the case of the fruit flies, the part of their brain in charge of memory and learning — called the mushroom body — The is also what determines wakefulness and, consequently, it's where the DPM are housed.

"It's almost as if that section of the mushroom body were saying 'hey, stay awake and learn this,'" says co-author Bethany Christmann, a graduate student at Brandeis. "Then, after a while, the DPM neurons start signaling to suppress that section, as if to say 'you're going to need sleep if you want to remember this later.'"

Christmann points out that knowing how sleep, memory and learning work together in the fruit fly brain can help researchers know what to look for when working with human participants.

"Eventually, it could help us figure out how sleep or memory is affected when things go wrong, as in the case of insomnia or memory disorders," she says.

Increased concussion awareness helping student athletes

This article explains why concussion laws and increased concussion awareness are beneficial for student athletes.

A large increase in the number of U.S. school-age athletes receiving treatment for concussions is likely due to new laws and increased public awareness, a new study suggests.
Researchers examined data collected from privately insured 12- to 18-year-olds across the United States between 2006 and 2012 in order to assess the impact of concussion laws. Since 2009, all 50 states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws about concussion treatment.
In states where such laws were in place during the study period, there was a 92 percent increase in the number of young athletes receiving treatment for concussion. Even in states without such laws, there was a 75 percent increase in concussion treatment for student players, according to the researchers.
"There are two stories here," study senior author Steven Broglio, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology and director of the NeuroSport Research Laboratory, said in a university news release.
"First, the legislation works. The other story is that broad awareness of an injury has an equally important effect. We found large increases in states without legislation, showing that just general knowledge plays a huge part."
The study was published online Dec. 22 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

Why students need to get enough sleep

This article explains why it is so important for young adults, especially students, need to get enough sleep.

Humans need sleep. Young adults especially need it, and more  of it if possible. While growth spurts may be over, teenaged brains are still developing, and they will not fully mature until a person’s mid-20s, at the least. While students are in school trying to expand their minds, the very structure of their brains is expanding at the same time. Young adults need to balance academics with their sleep, which actually aids in learning and development. It may often seem like these two activities are at odds with each other, but their correlation is important.
Young adults have odd sleeping schedules, and it is not completely their fault. Developing brains of adolescents are wired to go to sleep later. When combined with heavy collegiate workloads, freedom from parental restrictions and the atmosphere of the city that never sleeps, it is no wonder that NYU students often go to sleep extremely late. While late bedtimes alone can be troubling, affecting everything from throwing off our circadian rhythms to our immune systems, this issue is compounded during the winter time. Moreover, students from warmer regions with longer days and shorter nights may not be aware of the effects the winter can have on one’s system. By going to bed late, young adults exacerbate these effects, which can lead to medical issues.
Seasonal affective disorder — a form of depression caused by changes in seasons — is among the potential complications. It can be triggered by a variety of factors, including an unnatural sleep schedule and decreased exposure to light. Symptoms of seasonal affective disorder usually manifest during fall and winter, and deficient sleep during this period can make individuals more vulnerable to depression. Research indicates that going to bed late when the sun sets later is not necessarily problematic. An 11 a.m. wake-up time gives one plenty of sunlight to maintain proper Vitamin D levels and circadian rhythm. Going to bed late when the sun goes down early is a recipe for disaster, however, because an 11 a.m. wake-up time means five hours of sunlight at the most. Students should be wary of seasonal affective disorder and take sleep seriously. Depression in the middle of a semester can jeopardize both academics and social life.
In college, personal well-being is seldom prioritized. This should not be the case — sleep is an essential tool for physical and mental health. Sleeping in late for Palladium brunch rather than waking up to an early breakfast may seem preferable, but a balanced sleep schedule can literally make winter much brighter. Suspend late-night study sessions, close Netflix and go to sleep — your mind and body will be grateful.

Students in the US get the worst sleep of any country

A new study claims students in the US get the worst sleep of any country, and that this lack of sleep hampers learning.

It’s hard to master math when you’re too tired to keep your eyes open in class. While nutrition and family income have previously been associated with academic performance, now quantity of sleep has also been shown to play a role, according to a Boston College analysis reported on by the BBC. The study, which draws on data culled from tests taken by more than 900,000 students in 50 countries, found that the U.S. has the greatest proportion of students whose academic performance, particularly in math and science, suffers due to poor sleep, with 73% of 9 and 10-year-olds and 80% of 13 and 14-year-olds affected. Those rates are significantly higher than the international average of 47% and 57%, respectively.
The top 5 countries where poor sleep hampers learning are:

The study found variations within countries too. For example, in the U.S., middle school students in Colorado are more sleep deprived than their cohorts in Massachusetts.
Countries where sleep has the least impact on learning are:
  1. Kazakhstan
  2. Azerbaijan
  3. Slovakia
  4. Japan
  5. Malta
The findings were part of a 2011 study that gauged education benchmarks around the world. In order to assess how sleep and nutrition affected these results, Boston College researchers sent questionnaires to teachers, students and parents about students’ sleep habits. Those responses were then compared with test performance. The results of the new comparison have not been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

“Sleep is a fundamental need for all children,” Chad Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College told the BBC. “Our data show that across countries internationally, on average, children who have more sleep achieve higher in maths, science and reading,” Minnich added.

The low level of Z’s in affluent countries like the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are attributed to students having cell phones and tablets at their finger tips — literally. The light from the screen, held close to the face, makes it harder to fall asleep. ”Having a computer screen that is eight inches away from your face is going to expose you to a lot more light than watching a television on the opposite side of the room. It’s going to tell your brain to stay awake,” Dr. Karrie Fitzpatrick, a sleep researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois, told the BBC.

While the news is discouraging for U.S. parents, the problem can be fixed fairly easily. “As long you haven’t gone into extreme sleep deprivation, if you go back to seven to nine hours per night, as long as there has been no permanent damage, you can probably restore the functionality of accumulating, processing and being able to recall memories,” says Dr. Fitzpatrick.

Study claims home-schooled students are better rested than other students

A new study shows that children who are home-schooled get are better rested than other students.

Home-schooled students may be better equipped to learn because they're getting a lot more sleep, a new study suggests.

The first-of-its-kind national study of more than 2,600 adolescents, including about 500 home-taught kids, found that home-schooled students slept an average of 90 minutes more per night than students attending public or private schools.

By the end of the week, that's almost an entire night's sleep traditional students are missing, says Lisa Meltzer, the study's lead author and an assistant professor of pediatrics at National Jewish Health in Denver. She says the changes brought by adolescence include alterations to when the sleep hormone melatonin is released in teens' bodies.

Meltzer spent 2012 gathering and analyzing the data and finalized them this month. The study found that 55% of home-schooled teens got the optimal amount of sleep per week, as opposed to 24.5% of traditional public and private school students.

"You've living in Philadelphia, but your internal clock is in California," Meltzer says. "As the week goes on, that sleep debt accumulates and makes it harder to learn."

Holly Syx, 36, says home-schooling her six kids in Adger, Ala., means greater flexibility in schedules and a "very relaxed" atmosphere. She remembers hating to wake up early when she attended school, and she lets her kids wake up when they want. Learning starts around 9 a.m., she says, but they get more done than if the kids were in school.

The inflexible schedule of conventional school systems is a big reason many parents choose to teach their kids at home, says Brian Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute in Salem, Ore. Ray says more than 2 million kids are home-schooled in America. He says strict schedules, including early start times, means schools "run the family, rather than the family and kids running their lives."

"Home-based education makes it possible to have customization of education that schoolteachers dream of, and frankly don't get to do," Ray says.

Traditional high school educations provide valuable experiences and activities that home-schooled kids may miss out on, counters Frank Wells, a spokesman for the California Teachers Association. He says the sleep discrepancies may be caused in part by students' overloaded schedules, but "regardless of where kids go to school, parents and teachers need to work together to make sure students are getting the rest they need."

Study: Students who sacrifice sleep to study have academic issues


A new study shows that high school students who stay up late to study and lose sleep do not perform as well academically the next day.

Regardless of how much a high school student generally studies each day, if that student sacrifices sleep in order to study more than usual, he or she is more likely to have academic problems the following day. Because students tend to increasingly sacrifice sleep time for studying in the latter years of high school, this negative dynamic becomes more and more prevalent over time.


Those are the findings of a new longitudinal study that focused on daily and yearly variations of students who sacrifice sleep to study. The research was conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and appears in the journal Child Development.

"Sacrificing sleep for extra study time is counterproductive," says Andrew J. Fuligni, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences and a senior scientist at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, who worked on the study. "Academic success may depend on finding strategies to avoid having to give up sleep to study, such as maintaining a consistent study schedule across days, using school time as efficiently as possible, and sacrificing time spent on other, less essential activities."

For 14 days in each of the 9th, 10th, and 12th grades, 535 students from several Los Angeles-area high schools reported in diaries how long they studied, how long they slept, and whether or not they experienced two academic problems—they didn't understand something taught in class or they did poorly on a test, quiz, or homework. The students represented a mix of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

Although the researchers expected that extra hours of studying that ate into sleep time might create problems in terms of students' understanding of what they were taught in class, they were surprised to find that diminishing sleep in order to study was actually associated with doing more poorly on a test, quiz, or homework (the opposite of the students' intent).

"As other studies have found, our results indicated that extra time spent studying cuts into adolescents' sleep on a daily basis, and it is this reduced sleep that accounts for the increase in academic problems that occurs after days of increased studying,"

Fuligni explained. "Although these nights of extra studying may seem necessary, they can come at a cost." Fuligni said the study's findings do not suggest that teens should spend less time studying overall, but that those teens who give up sleep to study more than usual are more likely to have academic problems the following day.

Sleeping habits can cause problems for students


Sleeping is a college student's savior, but not getting enough sleep is a battle students face on a daily basis.

A study conducted by the Journal of American College Health showed that increased irritability, raised levels of stress and depression all play a part in college students' sleeping patterns.

Kent Bullis, a physician and health director at Ball State said getting up at the same time every day plays the biggest role in students who are sleep deprived.

"A lot of people sleep in on the weekends, which can throw off your sleeping routine," Bullis said. "By doing this you set yourself up for failure."

The Ball State Health Center treats students who have a prevalent problem with sleeping disorders, Bullis said.

"The vast majority of people who come in looking for solutions to problems with sleeping relate to poor sleep habits," Burris said. "Things such as drinking caffeine during the day can be a factor in irregular sleeping patterns."

Macy Thombleson, a freshman journalism major said when she doesn't get enough sleep she tries to make up for the loss of sleep through other regiments.

"Sometimes I don't get enough sleep so I compensate by taking naps during the day and get coffee if I'm super tired during the day," Thombleson said.

Sleeping disorders can also be caused by frequent use of marijuana or alcohol, according to the Journal of American College Health. The use of these substances sabotages mental and physical health.

Pulling all-nighters can also be considered harmful to the sleeping cycle because it throws off the body's natural time clock, according to the Journal of American College Health.

Medical News Today said 20 percent of students stay up all night at least once a month.

"All-nighters don't work for me," Thombleson said. "I don't think I ever get a good night sleep when I have a test the next day though, because I feel stressed."

Stress affects sleeping habits in 68 percent of college students, according to Medical News Today.

The Journal of American College Health said environmental factors could also cause disruptions in sleeping patterns.

This is apparent more in freshmen as they transition from their own bedrooms to small dorm rooms with no personal space. This creates stress that makes it harder for the student to get a full 8 hours of sleep.

Constant shifts in sleeping cycles can cause feelings of depression, reduced sociability and difficulty in concentrating.

Bullis said sleeping in a dark, quiet environment can help solve issues related to not being able to fall asleep.

The best way to prevent sleeping disorders is to remove yourself from stressful situations, try sleeping without any distractions such as the TV and to avoid drinking caffeine in the afternoon hours, Bullis said.

Cartoonist Steve Moore has devoted plenty of ink to lampooning everything associated with athletic training in his nationally syndicated comic In the Bleachers.

But even he admitted questioning whether to make light of concussions during his keynote address this week at the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association's 57th meeting at the Westin Galleria.

Of course, he still does it.

The cartoon he brought featured a machine that sucks concussions out of an athlete's head, and it's funny. But his hesitation underscores the seriousness of the issue. That goes double for high school athletes, whose brains still are developing.

"If a youngster sprains his ankle, the parents, coaches and the youngsters themselves can see the swelling, they can see the limping, the fact that they're on crutches and so forth, so they can follow the injury and understand the concept," said Bucky Taylor, an athletic trainer for Mesquite ISD. "But you can't put the brain on crutches."

Protecting the youth

To help protect athletes, Taylor and Dennis Hart, a part-time athletic trainer for Mesquite ISD, helped develop a bill dealing with concussions.

The bill, House Bill 2038, authored by Rep. Four Price, R-Amarillo, establishes a three-step process for dealing with concussions in student-athletes statewide.

It was signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry last month and takes effect Sept. 1, just in time for the upcoming high school football season.

The bill, dubbed Natasha's Law, calls for state-mandated education for all parties, removal from play of athletes suspected with a concussion, and guidelines for return to activity.

"A concussion is an injury to the brain, one of our most vital organs, and when a youngster sustains a concussion there's a great chance that they'll have a second and a third one, and if they haven't fully recovered — and this is a key point - from the initial concussion, and they're allowed to return to play while they're still symptomatic, incidents of a catastrophic brain injury are high, and that's what we're trying to prevent," Taylor said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 300,000 mild traumatic brain injuries, or concussions, occur annually in the United States as a result of participation in sports.

The Sports Concussion Institute estimates 10 percent of athletes in contact sports suffer a concussion during a season, and a 2006 report estimated there are 92,000 cases of concussion in high school sports yearly.
