Interesting facts about sleep

This article discusses a few interesting facts about sleep.

A proper sleep cycle ensures the well-being of our physical and mental health, but surprisingly we do very little to maintain our sleep cycle. These intriguing facts about sleep will motivate, if not coerce, you to take your 'sleep' more seriously.

· Economizing on sleep may lead to shrinking of brain
It's a fact that human brain does shrink with age, but people who sleep for less duration are prone to increased rate of reduction. The fact is backed by a research. There are many factors like cholesterol levels, physical activity which are linked to the rate of change in brain volume over a period of time—and sleep has emerged as one of the important factors. A study carried out by Claire Sexton, DPhil, lead researcher found that people who sleep less clocked a higher rate of decline in the size of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobe areas of the brain.

· Less sleep may lead to or speed up Dementia 
Researchers and doctors promote sleep for an enhanced memory. Now studies have found out that less sleep may lead to dementia or accelerate the emergence of this disease. More research is needed to establish if lack of sleep actually causes dementia; till then, the best thing to do is to relax and sleep for sufficient number of hours.

· Brain makes decision while we are asleep
Remember those times when you were irked to make a decision but couldn't make it. You closed your work and went to sleep. And when you woke up you realized that you've made the decision. Ever wondered why and how? This is a result of your brain that was busy organizing information, processing data and clearing up unnecessary information while you were asleep. The fact was brought to light in a study that was done by a team of French and UK researchers. In this research, a group of adults were given a task of word classification, one when they were awake, and the other while they were asleep. The researchers found that same pattern of brain activities were happening when individuals were presented with even more words while they were asleep. This perfectly explains why we respond when someone calls out our name while we are asleep.

· Sleep Apnea can be treated better with the help of family
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder which is characterized by breathing pauses or breaks during sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. The problem can be mild or severe, based on how often your lungs don't get enough air. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the best method for treating sleep disorders. Family support is vital to make a person adhere to this treatment. Studies suggest, people who rated their family relationship quality higher, adhered to CPAP treatment more closely.

· Night birds have more difficulty sticking to an exercise routine
Early risers are found to be disciplined when it comes to exercise routine. It is quite easy for them to get out of bed early morning, and go out for jogging, running, or other exercises. While on the other hand, night owls find it troublesome to stick to an exercise routine. For them getting out of bed early morning is next to impossible. In a study, it was found that night owls generally spent their time sitting aimlessly, feel like doing nothing and gave excuses for not being able to exercise like insufficient number of hours in the day.

· Sleeping with a pet alongside messes your sleep
The world is filled with pet lovers. Out of these pet lovers some even go to an extent where they share bed with their pets. This may sound wonderful but it actually affects your sleep. A research presented at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, found that 30% of pet owners who shared bed with their pets get interrupted sleep as they had to get up at least once in the night due to the barks, meows, tail wags, and more. So, overall this idea of sharing bed, however cute it sounds, will disrupt your sleep and affect your health.

Study: E-readers can hurt your sleep at night

A study shows that using an e-reader at night can interfere with your sleep. Instead, read from a printed book before bed.

If you're looking forward to catching up on some sleep over the holidays, you might want to put down your e-reader and pick up an actual printed book.

A small study conducted by sleep medicine researchers at Harvard Medical School indicates that e-books can interfere with readers' sleep cycles. According to the Guardian, "Study participants reading a light-emitting ebook took on average almost 10 minutes longer to fall asleep and said they were less sleepy an hour before bedtime than they were reading a paper book."

The study involved "12 healthy young adults" who were asked to read either a printed book or an e-book before going to sleep. The e-book readers experienced less rapid eye movement sleep than their printed-book-reading counterparts, and were less alert the mornings after.

The findings don't apply to the original Amazon Kindle, according to physician and professor Charles Czeisler, one of the researchers, because that e-reader doesn't emit light. The same goes for other e-ink readers such as Barnes & Noble's Nook, the Kobo and the original Sony Reader.

But users of newer e-readers and tablet computers, including the Kindle Fire and iPad, are at risk for less restful sleep, according to the study.

It's not just healthy sleep cycles that are at risk, say the researchers, noting "recent evidence linking chronic suppression of melatonin secretion by nocturnal light exposure with the increased risk of breast, colorectal and advanced prostate cancer associated with night-shift work."

The study might prove more relevant to older readers than younger ones, however. According to recent studies by Nielsen Book, teenagers much prefer printed books over e-books.

Link between cancer and sleep cycle

A link was found between a person's sleep cycle and cancer.

People who work around the clock could actually be setting themselves back, according to Virginia Tech biologists.
Researchers found that a protein responsible for regulating the body's sleep cycle, or circadian rhythm, also protects the body from developing sporadic forms of cancers.
"The protein, known as human period 2, has impaired function in the cell when environmental factors, including sleep cycle disruption, are altered," said Carla Finkielstein, an associate professor of biological sciences in the College of Science, Fralin Life Science Institute affiliate, and a Virginia Bioinformatics Institute Fellow.
Supported by a National Science Foundation CAREER award and the Fralin Life Science Institute, the work was published in October in the print edition of the journal Molecular Biology of the Cell, with Tetsuya Gotoh, a research scientist in Finkielstein's lab, as lead author.
Specifically, researchers found that, unaltered, the human period 2 protein directly interacts with tumor suppressor proteins in cells to control cell division.
"When (human period 2 protein) is non-functional because it is either mutated or somehow modified, then, it is unable to do its job and prevent the cells from dividing at certain times of the day," Gotoh said. "This is particularly a problem in cases where tumor suppressor genes are mutated as it happens in more than 80 percent of all cancer cases."
The researchers observed the connection by studying various human and animal tumor cells, where repressing the human period 2 gene led to both abnormal circadian rhythmicity and a malignant transformation.
Researchers are now working closely with patients to identify those at risk of developing cancer due to the malfunctioning of the protein and the gene that produces it.
Results from these studies may help develop new, more effective prevention strategies for populations at risk due to circadian disruption, such as women working night shifts.
"These findings highlight the complexity of the circadian-controlled network and emphasize its physiological relevance for human health and for new therapeutic interventions," Finkielstein said.
"Over the past two decades we've learned a great deal about the inner workings of the circadian clock, the internal timepiece that controls our sleep:wake cycle and a whole host of other daily bodily rhythms," said Ignacio Provencio, a professor of biology at the University of Virginia who was not involved with the study. "The Finkielstein lab discovered that a molecular gear of this clock interacts directly with a well-studied protein whose role is to suppress tumor formation. This remarkable finding is likely to provide insight into how disruption of the internal clock can lead to cancer."
Finkielstein has long studied the connection between circadian rhythms and cancer development, particularly the incidence of breast cancer in women who work night shifts like nurses and flight attendants.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Daytime Sleepiness: Skin Pigmentation Is a Complicated Factor

Vitamin D has received a great deal of attention recently. Vitamin D has long been recognized as primarily a regulator of calcium and phosphorus, helping to protect bone density. In recent years, however, our understanding of the functions of vitamin D in the body has expanded. Vitamin D is now understood to play an important role in metabolic and immune system functions. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a number of illnesses and chronic conditions, including high blood pressurediabetesmetabolic syndromepulmonary disease, and chronic pain.
We've seen evidence that vitamin D deficiency is associated with sleep problems, particularly with daytime sleepiness. A new study examined the link between daytime sleepiness and vitamin D, and also considered one of the major risk factors of vitamin D deficiency: skin pigmentation.
Researchers at Louisiana State University investigated the relationship between vitamin D and daytime sleepiness with two specific goals in mind. First, they wanted to determine whether a correlation exists between vitamin D levels in the body and excessive daytime sleepiness. Second, they sought to evaluate the role that race might play in the relationship between daytime sleepiness and vitamin D.
In earlier work, researchers at LSU had observed that more than half of the patients who came to their sleep clinic with sleep problems and with chronic pain were also deficient in vitamin D. They noticed this cluster of symptoms appeared to occur more often in patients who were African-American.
Vitamin D is actually a fat-soluble hormone that the body can receive in food and also through supplements. But the primary -- and most effective -- way the body accumulates vitamin D is during exposure to sunlight. Exposure to sunlight prompts our skin to self-manufacture vitamin D. Increased skin pigmentation lowers the rate of manufacture of vitamin D. Therefore, greater levels of skin pigmentation are considered a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency.

The results of the study support a strong correlation between excessive daytime sleepiness and vitamin D. They also indicate that race is a factor in the relationship between vitamin D and daytime sleepiness. But the results were in some ways surprising and indicate a complicated relationship, particularly where race is concerned.
Here's an overview of the most important findings:
  • Sixty-five percent of the study population was found to have a vitamin D deficiency.
  • The patients with greater skin pigmentation had higher average levels of daytime sleepiness and lower average levels of vitamin D, compared to those with less skin pigmentation
  • African-American patients made up 35 percent of the study population, but 55 percent of the group that was deficient in vitamin D
  • Only 6 percent of the group without a vitamin D deficiency were African-American
  • Among those with deficiencies of vitamin D -- under 20 mg/mL as measured by a blood test -- there was no correlation between vitamin D levels and daytime sleepiness. This is the opposite of what was expected based on prior research.
  • An exception to this was found among African-American patients in the study group. Among those African-American patients with vitamin D deficiency, there was a direct correlation between levels of vitamin D and daytime sleepiness. Among these patients, higher vitamin D levels were associated with higher levels of daytime sleepiness -- the exact opposite of what was expected.
It is this last finding that is unexpected, and surprised researchers themselves, who expected to see lower levels of vitamin D associated with higher levels of daytime sleepiness.

10 Reasons Babies Wake Up At Night

Most babies wake up at night, and this article discusses 10 common reasons why they do.


Most babies wake up at night. And although some superhero babies sleep 10-12 hours straight starting around 3-4 months of age, most infants wake up during the night and cry out for their parents. There are scientific reasons and some developmental and behavioral explanations for these awakenings. I spoke with my friend Dr. Maida Chen, a pediatric pulmonologist, mother to three and director of the Pediatric Sleep Disorders Center in Seattle. I put this list together regarding why babies wake up at night. I'll author a follow-up blog on ways you can help your baby when they wake up, too.
10 Reasons Babies Wake Up At Night:
1. Sleep Cycle: Babies wake up during the night primarily because their brain waves shift and change cycles as they move from REM (rapid eye movement) sleep to other stages of non-REM sleep. The different wave patterns our brains make during certain periods define these sleep cycles or "stages" of sleep. As babies move from one stage of sleep to another during the night, they transition. In that transition, many babies will awaken. Sometimes they call out or cry. Sometimes they wake hungry. It's normal for babies (and adults) to wake 4-5 times a night during these times of transition. However, most adults wake up and then fall back to sleep so rapidly that we rarely remember awakening. At 4 months of age, many parents notice awakenings after a first chunk of deeper sleep. This is normal, and often due to development of delta wave sleep (deep sleep). The trick for parents is to do less and less as each month of infancy unfolds during these awakenings; we want to help our babies self-soothe more and more independently (without our help) during these awakenings so that sleeping through the night becomes a reality.
2. Brain Waves: The majority of babies are really capable of sleeping for a prolonged 6+ hour period of time 1/2 way through infancy, around 6 months. As Dr. Chen explains, "When doing sleep studies we follow brain wave activity." After 6 months of age she says, "We see brain waves at 6 months of age and up that are similar in pattern to that of adults." Now that doesn't mean that babies that wake throughout the night have abnormal brain waves, but it does mean as they progress through infancy, they get more and more mature when it comes to sleep. Dr Chen says, "If you look at sleep studies on newborns and infants, they will look very different compared to older children. But by 6 months of age, the baby's brain wave patterns will look much like an 18-year-olds." That being said, unlike an 18-year-old, once some babies are awakened during transitions, they may call out for your help!
3. "Good Sleepers" Versus "Bad Sleepers": Some babies are just better sleepers right out of the gate. Dr Chen reminded me, "There are good sleepers and there are bad sleepers. Part of that is organically hard-wired. But there are also good sleepers with bad habits." Our job as parents is to do the best we can in creating good sleep habits. Most of that has to do with consistency from one night to the next. Some babies make habitual associations like always nursing to sleep, always being rocked to sleep or always being held to fall asleep. Then, when they have awakenings at night, they may cry out to have those associations (bottle, nursing or rocking to sleep) to get back to sleep. These associations can cause a good sleeper to have bad sleep, because of the habit.
4. Crying Is Part Of Being A Baby: There is a pretty serious ongoing debate and national dialogue between parents, psychologists, pediatricians, lactation consultants and scientists about letting babies cry-it-out versus not cry-it out. I'll not delve into much of the debate here, but if you're worried that letting your baby cry-it-out will damage them, try to relax. Dr Chen says, "We don't think that some crying is bad for a baby. The evidence to support long-term damage from crying at night is nil." Many pediatricians recommend letting your baby gradually learn to self-soothe or cry-it-out once they have self-soothing skills (turning over, sucking on fingers or hand, and more mobility) starting somewhere around 4-6 months of age.
5. Mom or Dad's Role At Night: Studies have evaluated how parents can change an infant's sleep. Studies have found that infant sleep disorders are affected by how many times a parent comforts them at night. The more parents camp out (remain in the room until baby is asleep), the more parents transfer the baby into the crib after asleep and the more they picked the baby up at night, the more likely the baby has sleep challenges. And although most studies have evaluated a mother's role in overnight awakenings, a2010 Tel Aviv study found that when fathers were more involved in infant care (day and night), in addition to mothers, their babies had fewer overnight awakenings. Take turns!
6. Development: Developmental milestones shift and change sleep. As described in the video, after 4 months of age, most babies have a prolonged period of sleep and then wake up every couple of hours because of sleep cycle changes. Sometimes they will wake up and roll over and then freak out and cry when they get stuck or move into a new position. The rolling milestone may translate into awakenings. At 6 months of age, babies are exploring the world, putting all sorts of objects and germs in their mouths, and subject to more infection. They're also learning to sit at 6 months of age and this milestones often triggers awakenings. At 9 months of age, babies learn how to pull themselves up in the crib and stand-up -- don't be surprised if they are awake more. Most parents are unpleasantly surprised to find their 9-month-old up and awake in the middle of the night standing up, ready to rock and roll.
7. Teething: There's no question that teething wakes children at night and disrupts sleep. Teething typically commences around 6 months of age but I hear about teething waking babies all the way through their toddlerhood. Acetaminophen is the only medication I recommend for teething.
8. Behavioral Changes: Many babies will have more frequent awakenings around 6 or 9 months of age due to advancing sense of independence and self-awareness. At 6 months of age, I often hear from parents their babies will wake up in the middle of the night and start talking, just go through their different sounds. No need to go to them if they are not fussing! When babies develop separation anxiety around 9 months of age, they will often change their sleep patterns. Often during those times of behavior change they will wake and scream out when they realize you're not at their side.
9. Infection: Infants and children typically have an upswing in infections after 6 months of age. This occurs primarily because once a baby reaches 6 months, they are capable of putting lots of new objects (including their hands) in their mouths, so their exposure to germs increases dramatically. Many babies who have colds or upper respiratory infections will wake due to congestion or coughing. Fever, vomiting and diarrhea will awaken babies at night, too. Hang on and support your baby with a little TLC. Sleep schedules typically go back to normal within a few weeks after the illness began, especially if you can keep up good sleep routines.
10. Pacifiers/Bottle: Many babies are conditioned to fall asleep (or fall back to sleep) while sucking on something. This starts just after birth, when newborns instantly fall asleep with breastfeeding or a bottle in their mouth. Many infants who use a pacifier will wake up between 6-12 months of age when the pacifier falls out. The easiest solution is to get rid of it all together! But remember, big habits die hard, if a baby learns to fall asleep sucking and does so for 6+ months, it can take awhile to unlearn the habit.
