Healthy diet 'could help with sleep disorders'

A healthy diet can reduce symptoms of sleep apnoea, according to a new study.

Published in the European Respiratory Journal, a study by the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association found that losing weight could be the key to a good night's sleep for patients who suffer with the condition.

Marianne J Davey, director of the association, said: "Being overweight or obese is one of the main factors associated with sleep apnoea, so if we can reduce this it will help overall."

The added that a healthy, nutrient-rich diet similar to that of the Mediterranean cuisine is a good option as it is lower in red meat consumption and higher in products such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Regular exercise would also go some way to helping the symptoms of the night time disorder, as would appropriate bedding and a clean surrounding area, Mrs Davey stated.

The need for weight loss surgery to restore a healthy sleeping routine could be avoided through the advice, as well as keeping a clean and healthy lifestyle.
