Study claims low sperm count may be due to lack of sleep

What next? A new study shows lack of sleep may lower sperm count and quality.- JR

Lack of sleep is the latest to join the band wagon of things to be blamed for the lowering sperm counts. A new study has warned that a person’s sperm count along with its quality gets reduced by a fourth on not getting the right amount of sleep.
It was found that men who slept less had low sperms count as compared with men who slept better. Researchers added that future studies will be looking at whether improving sleep will benefit semen quality.
“Given the facts that approximately 20 per cent of all young men may have reduced semen quality, and that sleep disturbances are common and increasing in industrialised countries, the results of this study may have important public health implications," researchers said.

According to a report by ‘MyHealthNewsDaily’, 953 young men were asked about their sleeping patterns and after taking their blood tests, measuring their hormone levels and semen stats they were sent home.
Almost 15 percent men found sleeping difficult, 13 percent stated that they slept restlessly. It was concluded that the semen quality went down with the how worse the men had slept.

The men with the poorest sleep had 25 percent reduction in sperms compared with men who slept okay. Researchers also took into consideration other factors such as alcohol, age and smoking. No differences in hormone levels across the group were found.

Researchers state that the study does not prove a link between sperm count and sleep quality. Although there are ways to explain the link, the researchers added.
