Team Epilepsy Reaches 100,000+ Members on Facebook

Team Epilepsy has reached more than 100,000 members on Facebook, more than doubling in size in just the past few weeks (since December 2011). Since its launch just a year ago, the epilepsy community page has continued to rise in popularity, highlighting the role social networking can play in bringing together people worldwide who share an interest in this chronic health condition.

"On December 14, 2011, Team Epilepsy announced it had grown to nearly 45,000 members, and as of January 26, 2012, we now have 100,000 fans," said Liz Moench, Founder and CEO of MediciGlobal. "Such an overwhelming response demonstrates the importance of social media in the lives of those with chronic health conditions."

MediciGlobal, a specialty patient recruitment-retention firm, launched Team Epilepsy in January 2011 as part of an integrated initiative to raise awareness about the importance of clinical research in developing new medicines, exchange information, and raise awareness about specific clinical trials available. The Team Epilepsy community has continued to grow at a rapid pace, helping to connect its members globally in an easily accessible and welcoming environment. The community is open to people who are in some way affected by epilepsy across the globe. The page garnered supporters from countries around the world, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the UK, the US and many others.

"Social Media is emerging as an important strategy for raising awareness of clinical trials. Patient communities are well-defined on Facebook, and people welcome the opportunity to share their experiences with epilepsy within our Team Epilepsy community," said Nick Halkitis, MediciGlobal's VP of Online Marketing and Digital Strategies and an administrator of the Team Epilepsy Facebook page. "We are able to reach out to and engage with specific patient groups in a unique, more timely and cost-effective way."

On Saturday, January 28th, Team Epilepsy and the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia travelled to Brunswick, GA, to personally congratulate the 13-year-old winner of the Purple Pride Creative Expression Contest, which was hosted by Team Epilepsy in honor of Epilepsy Awareness Month. The winning photo earned winner Christopher Carswell and his service dog, called Bronx, $500 for himself and $3,000 for his local affiliate of the Epilepsy Foundation of America (EFA) after receiving the most votes from the Team Epilepsy community. Chris personally presented the $3,000 winnings to the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia's Director of Education and Client Services, Lloyd Brown, while Team Epilepsy, friends and family looked on.
