Traveling for a specialist? Consider Texas' Medical Transportation Program (MTP)


This program that pays for medial travel is very important for Texas Medicaid patients who must trave to see specialists: pediatric neurology, child development, pediatric pulmonary, pediatric sleep etc etc.  - JR

Families in Texas ( San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Beaumont, Hill Country, San Angelo ) can use this program.


What is the Medical Transportation program?

Many CSHCN Services Program clients can use the Medical Transportation Program (MTP) to get to their doctor's office, drugstore, or any place that they get medical services. If you have no way to get to these places, MTP can help you.
The Medical Transportation Program (MTP) is part of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). It is not a part of the CSHCN Services Program. To learn more about MTP:

Routine Medical Transportation

This is the type of service that MTP arranges for you to go to a place in the county where you live or a county nearby. You must call MTP at least two business days before the day you need the ride.
Clients in most of Texas can call MTP at 1-877-MED-TRIP (1-877-633-8747).  This is a free call in Texas.
Clients in the Houston / Beaumont Service Delivery Area (SDA) should call Medical Transportation Management at 1-855- 687-4786 Toll Free to arrange services. Counties in this area include: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Harris, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Tyler, Walker, Waller, and Wharton.
Clients in the Dallas / Fort Worth Service Delivery Area (SDA) should call LogistiCare at 1-855-687-3255 Toll Free to arrange services. Counties in this area include: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Erath, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Navarro, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall, Somervell, Tarrant, and Wise.

Special Medical Transportation

This service is when you need help getting to the doctor or hospital in another city. It can help pay for travel, lodging and meals in some cases if you must stay away from home overnight or longer for medical reasons.
Special medical transportationincludes:
  • Paying you back for mileage when you drive a vehicle for services outside of your immediate area 
  • Prepaid bus tickets or airline tickets for trips of long distances
  • The cost of a hotel when you must stay overnight for medical reasons
In many Texas towns and cities, MTP can make special arrangements for you to stay at places that are designed for children with special needs and their families, such as the Ronald McDonald House.
Call MTP at 1-877-MED-TRIP (1-877-633-8747) at least five business days before you need to travel to set up this type of help. This is a free call in Texas.
